Back pain occurs from either an injury or a joint/muscle imbalance. An injury can happen suddenly from a fall or sports accident or develop gradually over time due to sub-optimal behaviours. Joint/muscle imbalances never happen suddenly, they always accumulate over a period of time. Poor posture is a common cause, as slouching or hunching over a desk strains the muscles and ligaments in the back, leading to discomfort and pain. Trauma from falls or sports accidents can cause significant back pain by injuring the spine, muscles, or ligaments, resulting in acute pain and potential long-term issues if untreated.
Repetitive joint strain from activities requiring repetitive motions, like lifting or twisting, can lead to chronic pain over time. Disc herniations occur when the discs cushioning the vertebrae bulge or rupture, compressing nerves and potentially causing severe pain. This condition is called sciatica and can result from both acute injuries and long-term stress on the spine.
Excessive stiffness in muscles or joints also contributes to back pain. When muscles or joints become overly tight, they limit movement and provoke your nerves, creating pain. This stiffness can stem from a lack of flexibility, poor physical conditioning, or prolonged inactivity. Understanding these causes is key to effective prevention and treatment strategies for a healthy back.
